PRM : Ambil Tindakan Tegas Banteras Pemerdagangan Manusia

PRM : Ambil Tindakan Tegas Banteras Pemerdagangan Manusia

PKR retains Permatang Pauh seat but with smaller majority

BUKIT MERTAJAM: PKR has comfortably retained the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat in a by-election, but with a smaller majority.

Party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, 62, polled 30,316 votes to beat Barisan Nasional’s Suhaimi Sabudin by 8,841, fewer than the 11,721-majority garnered by her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the 2013 general election.

Suhaimi, 43, who is Permatang Pauh Umno division secretary, garnered 21,475 votes in the four-cornered fight.

Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s Azman Shah Othman, 50, and independent Salleh Isahak, 53, both lost their RM10,000 deposit after only polling 101 and 367 votes respectively, which were fewer than one-eighth of the votes cast or the minimum required to keep their money. There were 843 spoilt votes.

The results of the by-election was announced at 10.15pm by returning officer Jusni Ismail at the National Youth Skills Institute tallying centre here yesterday.

Clear winner: Wan Azizah and some of her supporters posing for a group photo at the tally centre in Bukit Mertajam.

Dr Wan Azizah, who arrived at the centre at 8.55pm accompanied by PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, said her victory showed that the rakyat, especially the voters of Permatang Pauh, wanted to strengthen Pakatan Rakyat.

“It also shows that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is very much on their minds,” she said. “He is still relevant to the society.

“The result is also a referendum to the Federal Government that they oppose the Goods and Services Tax,” she added.

A DAP division member later presented her with a bouquet of flowers in conjunction with this Sunday’s Mother’s Day.

Meanwhile, Suhaimi expressed sadness but said it was “an eye-opener”.

“I’ll take this by-election as an experience to further expand my political career.

“I thank all those who have supported me and promise that Barisan will continue to serve the people,” said Suhaimi, who was accompanied by his wife Firyal Harlina Napiah, 42.

Barisan by-election director Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said: “We accept the voters’ choice with an open heart, but it was unfortunate that there was commotion in some areas.

“Some parties acted as though there are no laws in the country.”

Also present were Penang Umno chief Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman, Penang Gerakan chairman Teng Chang Yeow and other Barisan leaders.

The turnout in the May 2013 general election was 88.2% from a total electorate of 71,808 compared to almost 74% at yesterday’s by-election from an electorate of 71,890. Anwar polled 37,090 votes against 25,368 garnered by Barisan’s Mazlan Ismail.

Anwar, who is PKR adviser, and his wife have held the seat since 1982 when he first won it on a Barisan ticket.

After Anwar’s arrest in September 1998, Dr Wan Azizah contested and won the seat in the 1999 general election under the then Parti Keadilan Nasional and retained it in the 2004 and 2008 general elections.

She vacated the seat on July 31, 2008, for a by-election which was won by Anwar with a majority of 15,671 votes.

The lowest majority garnered by Dr Wan Azizah was in the 2004 general election when she won by only 590 votes.

Yesterday’s by-election was held following Anwar’s conviction for sodomising his former aide and after an unsuccessful appeal for a royal pardon. - Star, 8/5/2015

Utusan Hari Buruh 1 Mei Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM)

Utusan Hari Buruh 1 Mei Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM)

PERMATANG PAUH, May 2, 2015:

One-month-old Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) member Azman Shah Othman was named as its candidate in the Permatang Pauh by-election, amidst controversy and inconsistencies.
It was previously reported that former Penang PRM chairman Datuk Gary Nair called on Azman to withdraw from the by-election.
The central leadership later refuted that claiming Azman was a candidate of their choosing.
Azman,50, a businessman, entered the race in controversy on nomination day, when he told reporters his name was Azman Shafie and that he was an independent candidate.
At the press conference today, he denied ever giving that name.
“I have many pet names but my name is Azman Shah Othman.
“I said I was independent because I am not aligned to either Barisan Nasional or Pakatan Rakyat. I was not well, it was very hot there and I was thinking of all kinds of things,” he said at a press conference at Safira Country Club, here today.
He said the party did not have a manifesto and people did not have to hear from him as they could always go for ceramahs held by BN and PR.
“I have held small greet sessions with voters, but let BN and PR hold their ceramah first and we will show up at the end to brainwash them and surprise them.”
When asked if he supported hudud, he said the party did but wanted a detailed explanation as many aspects of it was still unclear.
The candidate who claimed he knew a little Mandarin because he studied in a Chinese school, alleged although he had only been a PRM member for one month when he joined on April 9, he was the perfect choice for the people to have their voices heard in Parliament.
“I want to help channel their disappointments and meet their needs as their representative.”
PRM president Ariffin Salimon, 77, meanwhile said the party did not support the Sedition Act 1948 and the implementation of the Goods andServices Tax (GST).
“The GST burdens the low income people, this is our stand.”
PRM secretary-general Koh Swe Yong said Azman’s nomination was the first northern zone candidate of their party in over 40 years.
“The decision to field him was last minute and there was some confusion between our members about that.
“We want to announce that he is our candidate and despite us not having alliance with any coalition, we are willing to work with anyone that can bring benefit to the people.”
Party vice-president and PRM northern zone coordinator Goh Chuin Loon said Azman was chosen despite being a relatively new member, because the latter was local and the party found he had what it took to be the candidate.
“We at the PRM northern zone suggested him and the central leadership agreed.
“We classify what happened with Gary Nair as a miscommunication and despite that we want to say that we value his contributions to the party.”

Parti Rakyat man backs hudud in Kelantan

Parti Rakyat man backs hudud in Kelantan

 | May 2, 2015
We must first look at how they plan to implement and enforce it, he says
shah hukum hudud
SEBERANG JAYA: Azman Shah Othman, the Parti Rakyat Malaysia candidate in Permatang Pauh, has declared support for hudud, the Islamic criminal penalties. He said he backs the PAS-led Kelantan state government’s controversial decision to implement hudud in Kelantan.

But he said PRM must first scrutinise the Kelantan government’s plans on enforcing the law.

In March the Kelantan government passed amendments to existing state Syariah law to pave way for enforcing hudud, pending parliamentary approval.

“We support hudud as it is Allah’s law. But we have to first look at how the government plans to implement and enforce it,” said Azman, who was born in Permatang Pauh 50 years ago but now lives in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

He was unveiled as PRM candidate for the Permatang Pauh by-election by PRM vice president Goh Chuin Loon today, just five days away from polling on May 7.

Goh said Azman was not an independent candidate as claimed last week by former party Penang chairman Gary Nair who, he said, was an ordinary party member and not in a position to declare Azman’s status.

Nair, claiming to be chairman of the Penang chapter, had said the party had rejected Azman’s candidacy as he was not even a PRM member.

Goh said the party had pooled together all northern region branches into a combined northern zone at the national congress in November. The Penang branch ceased to exist, and Nair’s purported position as Penang chairman was redundant.

The northern zone PRM is based in Sungai Petani, Goh said, clarifying that Azman had been an ardent party supporter before becoming a member on April 9 last year.

Asked about Nair’s stand against Azman’s candidature, Goh merely said that “his views could be caused by a misunderstanding and miscommunication.”

Azman meanwhile said Parti Rakyat planned to have small dialogue sessions and a door-to-door campaign to “reach out to voters” and leave the task of organising large scale public rallies and events to its opponent from Parti Keadilan Rakyat and Barisan Nasional.

He said PRM, which began its by-election campaign on May Day, was capable of springing a surprise on polling day.

Azman faces PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, BN’s Suhaimi Sabudin and independent candidate Salleh Isahak.

After week’s silence, PRM finally starts Permatang Pauh campaign

OoiParti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) candidate Azman Shah is set to start his campaign for the Permatang Pauh by-election, May 2, 2015. — Picture by K.E. Ooi PERMATANG PAUH, May 2 — Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) that is also contesting in the Permatang Pauh by-election finally made an appearance today on the eighth day of the campaign.
The little-known party called a press conference this morning to introduce its candidate, Azman Shah Othman, and explain its campaign strategy.

“We are not going to organise any large scale ceramahs or events but we will be meeting the people more,” Azman said at the press conference at Safira Country Club in Seberang Jaya here.

He said they will let their political opponents, Barisan Nasional and PKR, organise the major events and ceramahs.

“People can go for their large scale events and after that, we will meet the people to ‘brainwash them’ and we will ‘surprise’ everyone in the end,” he said.

PRM only started meeting the people yesterday and Azman said they will continue doing so to “reach out to the people” throughout the campaign period until polling day on May 7.

He said his goal is to be there for the people and really listen to them, which he believed the young voters are more receptive to.

When asked about the Penang PRM branch’s objections against Azman as the candidate, the party vice president Goh Chuin Loon said the former Penang PRM chairman Gary Nair is now only an ordinary member.

She also said the Penang PRM branch no longer exists as the party, during its last congress in November, had combined all branches here into the northern zone PRM.

“We respect Gary’s views on this as he is a long-time member of PRM but we believe that his objections were due to a misunderstanding and pure miscommunication,” she said.

Gary had objected to Azman’s candidacy and PRM contesting in the by-election, while claiming Azman was not a party member.

Goh said Azman had joined PRM on April 9 this year but before that he had been a “strong PRM supporter”.

When asked why a new member was picked as a candidate, she said it is because he was a local and very passionate about serving the people.

As for PRM’s stand on the controversial hudud bill submitted by PAS, Azman said they support hudud as it is Allah’s law but they must first look at how the government plans to implement and enforce it.

The northern zone PRM is based in Sungai Petani, Kedah and they admitted that they had “very few PRM members in Penang”.

Azman is in a four corner fight with PKR’s Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, BN’s Suhaimi Sabudin and independent candidate Salleh Isahak for the May 7 by-election.

PRM: Let Ptmg Pauh be third force in Parliament

PRM: Let Ptmg Pauh be third force in Parliament

The Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) candidate for Permatang Pauh by-election hopes that the voters will give him and the party a chance to be the 'third force' in the Parliament.

The 50 year-old businessman Azman Shah Othman said, Malaysians could be in dire need of a representative that could act as the 'check and balance' to both BN and Pakatan Rakyat, an aspiration that he was keen to achieve.

"BN is a federal government while DAP is a component of the opposition pact that is the Penang state government... here PRM wants to play a role.

"We want to have a check and balance. And if there is something that is not right or not beneficial (their policies or programmes), we will come forward," he told a press conference in Permatang Pauh today.

When asked on his plan for the Permatang Pauh should he wins the four-cornered fight, Azman Shah said, his promises among others, were to ensure the welfare of the lower and middle-income groups were well taken care of, spend all his allowances as a member of parliament for the needy, and to work with the authorities to reduce the crime rates.

Azman Shah also pledged to oppose the Sedition Act to ensure the freedom of speech, to fight against corruption, to ensure the abolishment of Goods and Services Tax (GST), as well as to solve local problems such as health, waste and drainage.

However, the little-known Azman Shah, admitted that he had just joined PRM barely a month ago, and his candidacy was approved by the party's central leadership based on his 'overwhelming' support towards the party's ideology.

Doing surveys

Asked about his slow pace even though the campaign had entered the second week, Azman Shah said, it was because he and the machinery were busy doing surveys, asking the constituents what they wanted and their needs, as well as their expectation for the constituency.

"We are not slow... firstly we let other candidates campaign first. Let them campaign and finish their campaign then we will come to bring our ideas to them," he said.

The Permatang Pauh by-election on May 7 sees a four-cornered fight between Suhaimi Sabudin (Barisan Nasional), Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (PKR), Azman Shah from PRM and Salleh Isahak (Independent).

The by-election is being held following the rejection by the Pardons Board of Anwar Ibrahim's petition, made through his family, for a royal pardon over his sodomy conviction, causing him to be disqualified as Permatang Pauh MP.

Anwar is now serving a five-year jail term for committing the offence.
