PETALING JAYA: Former Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) deputy president Rustam A. Sani passed away at his home in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur at 2.30am on Wednesday. He was 64.

The noted academician, newspaper columnist, poet and writer was early to the blogging scene with his Vox Populi and Suara Ku.

He was the vice-president of PRM when it merged with Parti Keadilan Nasional to form Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), which saw him taking up the post of PKR information chief.

Described as one of Malaysia's leading intellectuals, he has served on Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaya and the Institute of Strategic and International Studies.

In the late 1980s, he was awarded the prestigious Hadiah Sastera Negara (National Literary Award).

Blogger Anil Netto, in his tribute, noted that Rustam had just completed two books - Failed Nation: Concerns of a Malaysian Nationalist and Social Roots of the Malay Left.

"The book launch was actually scheduled for 26 April. These should be collectors’ items for all concerned Malaysians," Netto wrote.
